When you're forced to choose between ice cream and fruit
Last night after dinner I was really craving some ice cream. This is actually an every day occurrence. I usually have to have something sweet after a meal. Even if it’s just a little bit of dark chocolate. But, boy, when there’s ice cream in the house, WATCH OUT! Joseph and I devour it. Every night. And sometimes I even sneak a bowl during the day when he’s not around. I don’t know why I feel guilty eating ice cream during the day, but I do. And so I’d rather no one know about it. Now, of course, the whole world can know about it since I’m posting it on the internet. Oh well.
Back to last night. I was craving some ice cream as we were sitting on the couch watching some online TV. I did a quick mental checklist of everything I had eaten that day to see if I “deserved” a bowl of ice cream. How many vegetables had I eaten? How many fruits? Well, yesterday my diet consisted of cereal, pizza, and some beans, rice, and a little bit of broccoli. So I knew I hadn’t eaten enough “good for me” things to deserve the ice cream.
But deep inside I knew I didn’t care.
So I said to Joseph, “I’m really craving some ice cream but I know I should have some fruit instead.” He didn’t really reply so I knew I was on my own in making the decision. I thought a little further about it and decided to just go for the ice cream. I knew I needed the fruit, and that it would make me feel better, but I couldn’t resist my cravings!! What is a girl to do? Well, choose the craving of course! But here’s the thing. I didn’t stop at just ice cream. Oh no. I scooped the vanilla fudge swirl in to my bowl and it looked lonely. So I added chocolate fudge sauce. Then I decided there was an absence of color and texture in the bowl, so I added colored M&M’s to it. As I’m making the sundae, Joseph walks in and starts laughing. At me. Because when faced with the decision to have fruit or ice cream, and KNOWING I should have the fruit, I choose not only the ice cream but the fudge sauce and the M&M’s. I piled on everything that is the total opposite of fruit. Anything that is not fruit basically went into the bowl.
I mean, what else was I supposed to do? Seriously!

What a great idea! About 15 years ago i had to have a tooth pulled and it changed the alignment of my jaw and gave me several weeks of TMJ pain. During that time my dentist recommended just what you describe, a milkshake made from protein powder. (I also learned to add a frozen banana to the chocolate shake mix, which made it the consistency of a milkshake and improved the flavor). It gave me the nutrition my body needed to heal and also tasted like a special treat. I had forgotten all about that but will resurrect the plan and put it to use now!

Hi Gloria! Ditto for me. I LOVE icecream too, gee, who doesn't? We could go into flavors! I found out what to do and it may ? help you, too. My girlfriend
makes a half of a smoothie with her protein powder and she said that this brand was awesome, like a milkshake and healthy. Soooooo, when I have that same
craving, I do the same thing and it works! It has something natural in it that calms the sweets urge. I lost some needed weight too. Still have a treat sometimes. Life is short. Feel better about it tho.
Gloria, all those ice cream flavors you listed are making me VERY HUNGRY!!! I might have to make a special trip to the store. Right after I finish off the ice cream we already have here at home.
I LOVE ice cream! I would almost always prefer it to any other dessert, unless, of course, the dessert is something you can add ice cream to —- like apple pie or a warm brownie! But Micheal and I are both diabetic, and most of the sugar-free ice cream is not good to us. HOWEVER, we have recently discovered Blue Bunny Sugar-Free ice cream, and we can hardly tell it from the “real” stuff. It comes in yummy flavors too, like Peanut Butter Fudge, Bunny Tracks (vanilla ice cream with caramel swirls and chocolate covered caramel pieces), and Brownies and Cream. Mmmm! It's not Haagen Daz or Ben and Jerry's, and it will certainly never replace Cold Stone Dairy, but it does satisfy my craving without ruining my diet! Now why did Sheri have to bring up those chocolate chip cookies???
wow, marie!! now I have to reconsider those cookies that I want to eat, haha! thanks for the true, and thought provoking comment.
I would have a hard time choosing too. When given the option of icecream or fruit I would choose Ice cream everytime but I might add banannas to mine. I see something else in this post. It is an anology for me. That when someone sins they don't just sin a little they add things to their sin to try to hide the fact that they are sinning. In knowing we should have the good fruit in our lives we might often choose the ice cream instead. God wants us to have the good fruit in our lives. Gal. 5:22-23. Sometimes we crave and desires things that God does not want us to have and we complain to Him but here is a thought… Pray everytime you want bowl of ice cream or sin and see what fruit He might want for you instead.
